College scholarship requirements and rules

Scholarships are offered to students majoring in music. Scholarships will be given for majors in these music fields: Music Performance, Music Education, Music Theory/History, Musical Theater, Sacred Music, Music Industry, Jazz Studies, Music Pedagogy, Music Therapy, others as approved by GMEF. They are paid to the college or university of the student's choice in four equal installments over a four-year period.

Auditions are held for piano, voice, strings, or band instruments.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicant must:

  1. be a resident of Gaston County;
  2. be in the 12th grade and attend a public, private, or home school in Gaston County;
  3. have completed at least one semester of his/her senior year;
  4. be referred by his/her music teacher;
  5. major in music in college.

AUDITION RULES

  1. A written theory test will be given. (Refer to music requirement list for study reference sources.)
  2. Refer to attached lists for audition performance requirements.
  3. Applicants must furnish the judges with three published or legally documented copies of their music with measures numbered. A letter of permission must be attached to photocopied music..
  4. If an accompaniment is indicated in the score, it MUST be used. Entrants must provide their own accompanists. Accompaniments must be live (no tapes, etc.) Vocalists must perform with live accompaniment.
  5. Compositions may be performed one year only.
  6. Decisions of the judges will be final.
  7. Photos of all applicants will be taken at the audition and winners' photos may be used by GMEF for publicity.

Applications are due by Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024*.

THEORY

A written theory test will be given. The test that is given as a part of the GMEF Scholarship audition is a test of very basic knowledge of music theory. Applicants should download the study guide.

The following books may be used as a source of study:

• Master Theory, Books 1-3: Peters - Yoder, Kjos Publisher and/or

• Essentials of Music Theory Books 1 & 2 by Alfred
